I live close to Palisades nuclear power plant, the oldest in the western world. It has been shut down numerous times. Local news ran a story involving inside whistle blowers and how bad of condition it really is in and how it's been hidden from the public. If something happens to this pos I'm not sticking around. Living near a nuclear power plant it seems wise to have an evacuation plan. Owning a gas mask as to not breath nuclear particles seems to also be a wise choice.
Whatever the reason, a gas mask seems to be a logical piece of gear to acquire. I've owned a few military surplus models but not sure I would really trust my life to them. I have also found out that the filters do have a shelf life. When expired the filters are actually toxic to use.
Are any of the surplus masks worth buying?
I've owned a couple Israeli masks, the civilian and the M15 and also a Finnish M61. They seem quality but they are old and surplus.
Should a new manufactured mask be used over surplus models? Are there any affordable masks that are worth considering?
