Gas Masks

Postby ZKK » Wed Jul 25, 2012 2:36 am

I live close to Palisades nuclear power plant, the oldest in the western world. It has been shut down numerous times. Local news ran a story involving inside whistle blowers and how bad of condition it really is in and how it's been hidden from the public. If something happens to this pos I'm not sticking around. Living near a nuclear power plant it seems wise to have an evacuation plan. Owning a gas mask as to not breath nuclear particles seems to also be a wise choice.

Whatever the reason, a gas mask seems to be a logical piece of gear to acquire. I've owned a few military surplus models but not sure I would really trust my life to them. I have also found out that the filters do have a shelf life. When expired the filters are actually toxic to use.

Are any of the surplus masks worth buying?
I've owned a couple Israeli masks, the civilian and the M15 and also a Finnish M61. They seem quality but they are old and surplus.

Should a new manufactured mask be used over surplus models? Are there any affordable masks that are worth considering?

When your life depends on it, you know that you'll want the best you could get. With that said, I have a surplus OM-10 gas mask that I paid 10 bucks for...to me, it will be used for, at most, tear gas...and I imagine that it works a little better then a wet rag.

Do you have Potassium-Iodine (KI) tablets?

I have the pills and the powder. I suggest the powder to most people as it stores much longer and can be disguised as something else or disolved in a bottle of water.

hahahaha

It's just potassium iodide powder. The place I bought it doesn't seem to sell it anymore. I've seen it on health food websites.
