Smith N Frame holster for hunting

Postby luvall » Fri Mar 16, 2012 9:50 am

I need advice. I recently purchased a S & W 629 / 6 inch for deer hunting. I'm planning to add a Burris Fast Fire III and need a holster that will fit the final product. Knowing me, there may be a time I add a handgun scope as well. I am leaning toward a shoulder rig that will go over my camo clothing but I'm open to discussing other options. What is out there that will work? If someone has something that will work - and it is for sale - I'm all ears.

For hunting, keep it simple.

Go to Uncle Mikes web-site and see what is available.

Don't mess with Uncle Mikes, they aren't too good. That type of holster is a bit out of our specialty, but contact these guys - they build super nice holsters: http://www.diamonddcustomleather.com/Chest_Holsters.php

There is another outfit that makes really good hunting rigs, but I will have to dig up their contact info.

Just be careful about the retention on some of the chest/shoulder-type hunting rigs - I see a lot of custom makers that put the retention strap behind the trigger guard and leave the trigger exposed - a strong branch caught in the trigger can fire it then, or something catching the hammer can cock it easily and a light bump to the trigger fires it. Retention strap should go around the back of the hammer, or else the hammer should be covered. Trigger should always be covered on a DA revolver.

For a gun that big and heavy, with a scope, go with a tanker-style for a holster.
